20 Jobs created as Cumbrian Bakery gears up for Christmas

Bells of Lazonby has announced plans to recruit new permanent members of staff, following its busiest festive period ever.

The company supplied four of the major supermarkets with ‘Free From’ items last Christmas, and confirmed that all of them have asked Bells to be their supplier this year.

On top of that, it is producing brand new lines for two of its existing customers, all of which is expected to generate an additional £1m turnover annually.

Managing director Michael Bell said the 20 new staff positions were on top of the seasonal staff employed every year by the company, and brought the number of permanent employees to 195.

“The additional growth in business is great news,” he said. “Our business success owes a lot to the innovation we have shown in product development, and to the experience and commitment of our whole team of staff.”

Mr Bell continued: “We have always offered permanent employment and a large proportion of our staff have been with us for more than 10 years.

“We have also continued to invest strongly in our equipment and facilities, and this puts us in a good position looking forward.”

Philip Callaghan, operations director for Bells of Lazonby, said the workload is so great over the festive period, preparations are scheduled to begin for Christmas 2013 within weeks.

Stollen base is made in advance and frozen, ready to be dipped fresh in November and December, while work will also begin on thousands of Christmas puds soon.
