Day rates drop for Food Industry Interims Daily rates for interim managers in food manufacturing have dropped by a fifth in some disciplines as supply has exceeded demand and applicants have engaged in "bidding wars" to secure contracts, according to interim managers contacted by Food Manufacture last month.
One said: "2009 was the year of the reduced rate. Some contacts of mine have gone to interviews and the first question asked has been how low will you go on your daily rate?"
Owing to the recession, the market had been flooded by people that had lost their jobs and were exploring interim work as a stopgap rather than as a conscious career choice, added Jon van Blerkom, an interim manager with an operations background. This had depressed rates and standards, he added.
However, demand had remained strong for interim managers in more specialised technical roles, especially specifications, while things were also picking up in new product development, said recruitment consultant Jarvis Johnson.
Roland Froebel, an experienced interim manager, said he remained confident that the interim market would continue to grow because manufacturers often needed someone with a specific skill-set for a particular task for a limited period. "An interim can become a 'solution provider' rather than a person that plugs a gap. This is a shift in perception , but one that I think will happen."
