Cameron drops in on Warburtons as parties woo the Food Industry
David Cameron yesterday told workers at Warburtons’ bakery in Bolton that the proposed increase in National Insurance contributions was “an economy killer, a recovery killer and a jobs killer”.
The Tory leader dropped in on the facility after the baker’s executive director, Ross Warburton, publicly came out against the proposed increase.
“It’s basically a tax on jobs that will lead to less jobs being created and probably lead to more jobs being lost,” Cameron said.
In January, Warburtons announced that it had started a 90-day redundancy consultation with 121 of the 480 staff at one of its Bolton factories.
Dozens of business leaders have backed the Conservatives’ stance on NI in the past week, although Tesco said it would stay out of the row. Cameron also visited and wholesaler Bestway Cash & Carry in Cardiff, after boss Zameer Choudrey also backed the Tories.
Gordon Brown this week visited both smoothie maker Innocent and supermarket giant Morrisons, as the main political parties continue to chase the support of the UK’s grocery trade.
