Pork Farms merger faces competition probe

The merger of Pork Farms with Kerry Foods’ chilled savoury pastry business has been referred to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) for an in-depth investigation, the competition watchdog has confirmed.

The CMA announced in December that the merger would be referred for full investigation unless its concerns – that the merger “may lead to higher prices or a reduction in choice or quality for consumers of these chilled savoury pastry products” – were addressed by Pork Farms.

It said since Pork Farms offered no such undertakings, the CMA will now begin an in-depth merger investigation, with a final decision due by 21 June 2015.

The decision on the merger will be made by a group of independent panel members supported by a case team of CMA staff. Further details relating to the investigation is available on the website.
