This food manufacturing business operates from a modern purpose-built BRC accredited site, where they manufacture products for a variety of customers.

With a well-established product range and customer base in both the UK and further afield, they are expanding rapidly and have excellent future growth potential.

A vacancy has arisen for a permanent Head of Technical / Technical Manager to work with the Senior Management team, implement robust Technical procedures and practices, and participate in the wider development and growth of the business.

The Role

The Head of Technical will lead the technical team and oversee all Technical matters for the business. This is a ‘hands on’ role involving working with a team committed to maintaining high standards of food quality and safety.

Duties will include:

  • Manage, develop and deliver the Technical strategy for the site;
  • As part of the senior management team, add influence, knowledge and gravitas to decisions that will affect both the Technical direction and future profitability of the business;
  • Overall responsibility for QA, Raw Materials, Hygiene, Specifications, Pest Control, Microbiology, Laboratory, Audits, HACCP;
  • Able to utilise strong people management skills to manage, direct, and motivate the Quality and Technical team;
  • Work with the Quality Manager to ensure the site is ‘audit ready’ for Internal Audits, Customer Audits, Third Party Audits, Regulatory Audits;
  • Host visitors on site including Audit/Certification teams and Customers; 
  • Management and implementation of HACCP and Allergen Controls;
  • Review and improve Food Safety and Quality Management systems to ensure they are robust enough to stand up to significant growth;
  • Manage supplier approval and ongoing validation for ingredients, packaging and equipment;
  • Develop cohesive relationships with other departments including: Production, Operations, Innovation, Sales, and Supply Chain;
  • Organize and improve Technical systems and information that will enable the business to better serve their customers from a Technical resource point of view, and be reactive to customer requests/questions;
  • Work closely with the Development team on product launches, specifications and product costings;
  • Liaise with procurement and suppliers regarding product technical specifications;
  • Review internal Laboratory requirements and implement additional in-house testing capacity to underpin business growth;
  • Respond to increasing industry demands for technical excellence and keep up-to-date on new and existing Food Legislation, implementing any changes required to ensure the business stays compliant;
  • Ensure Technical knowledge and capability is shared to allow the business to push boundaries and operate at the forefront of industry developments.

The Person:

  • Experienced Food industry Technical Manager with excellent people management skills;
  • Scientifically aware and knowledgeable on Processing, Chemistry, and Microbiology, with a desire to learn about new product areas;
  • Able to thrive in a company culture that is relaxed, independent, friendly, open;
  • Technology savvy, able to assist as the Technical function implements more computerized / automated systems;
  • Able to coach and consult team members and colleagues at all organisational levels from factory floor to senior leadership;
  • Degree/HND or equivalent in a scientific discipline;
  • Confident talking to customers, able to communicate technical/scientific concepts to a layperson;
  • Experience of writing Technical policies and procedures and implementing effective work practices that allow for increased production volumes whilst staying fully compliant to regulatory requirements;
  • Strong understanding of HACCP, food legislation, BRC and quality hygiene auditing;
  • Down to earth hands-on management style;
  • Eager to play a major part in an exciting growth story;
  • Ambitious, as there will be an opportunity to progress into a Group Technical role with responsibility for two or three sites. 

Salary £63,000 - £70,000 pa + an excellent package of Benefits. Ref: 3444
